week one meditations
Everyone is welcome to share an experience with meditation or worship from the past week.
I had a wonderful experience with worship on Sunday. We visited a small church where the children join with the adults in the first part of worship, then leave after the children's sermon. This gave me an opportunity to see worship through my 2-year-old's eyes. She was completely tuned in the whole time, though she can't have understood most of what was going on. During the congregational prayer, people were invited to come forward and kneel if they wanted. When she saw this, she jumped up and said, "Let's go, mommmy," and started up the aisle. What else could I do? We walked to the front, I kneeled and she sat on the kneeler, she bowed her head and we prayed. It was all a big lesson in worship to me. Even with her limited understanding, she participated fully in worship and was excited to do so. How could I do less?

In a book I'm reading for seminary this week I came accross an interesting idea. The author speaks of, "priveleging God conversation." The idea is that we are surrounded by conversation in our world- friends, family, media, etc., and our conversation with God can be drowned out by all the noise. We need to take time to silence the other voices so that we can hear God's voice, and then give that conversation priority all the time, so that all other conversation takes a back seat to our conversation with God. So, for example, when the advertisements scream at me that I need to have the newsest whatever to be fulfilled, sexy, and accepted, above that I hear God's voice telling me I am already beautiful, loved, and worthy. I thought this fit perfectly with what we're exploring in the spiritual disciplines- means to privelege God conversation above all else.
